A concert of Spanish music
— and things Spanish

The MCO apologizes for this extra email;
last week’s was just plain wrong!

WHEN THE MCO heads south into Spanish repertoire, things heat up in Westminster Church. Add Québec opera star Julie Boulianne into the mix and watch out! MCO’s Anne Manson carefully concocted this sultry mix of things Spanish and French even though she wasn’t slated to conduct.

“When I first came to the MCO,” says Anne, “we were doing a fair number of cross-cultural projects, such as the one with Kiran Ahluwahlia, and we talked about something similar. I thought this would be a way to still play classical music, but music with a strong cultural presence and folklore. This concert is focused not just on Spanish music, but beyond, into a range of things Spanish.”

Guest conductor Jesús Amigo’s repertoire includes all styles and periods, from Baroque to contemporary music, but he gives special attention to Spanish music. This concert will begin with Joaquín Rodrigo’s Dos miniaturas andaluzas (Two Andalusian Miniatures) that, while composed in 1929, only received its premiere performance in 1999, two years after his death. The charming Serenata, op. 87, by Joaquín Turina, follows.

And then there’s our soloist! MCO often plays works by José Evangelista (a fact he has happily acknowledged!). Mezzo-soprano Julie Boulianne will sing Evangelista’s Cantares, for mezzo-soprano in addition to Manuel de Falla’s El amor brujo.

Pre-concert event / speaking of passion, arrive early for a hot and extra-special dance presentation choreographed by Flamenco specialist Claire Marchand; 6:45 pm.
