MCO facts

 

_1_ The Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, founded in 1972, has performed over 350 concerts for Manitoba audiences during 35 seasons.

_2_ In 2006/07, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra enjoyed a paid attendance of 5,120 for its 8-concert series in Westminster United Church, with an additional 600 attending a special concert with Emma Kirkby and Daniel Taylor.

_3_ The Manitoba Chamber Orchestra’s Arts Advocacy Program introduces 360 Winnipeg Core Area elementary school children to chamber music each season. This is supported in part by the Children’s Heritage Fund of the Winnipeg School Division.

_4_ The Manitoba Chamber Orchestra has premiered over 75 new Canadian works for chamber orchestra in the last 16 years. Half of those have been works of Manitoba composers.

_5_ More than half of the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra’s concerts are heard nationally on CBC Radio Two, reaching an audience of 3.7 million listeners annually in Canada, plus audiences elsewhere.

_6_ The Manitoba Chamber Orchestra is the first North American orchestra to have been recorded by the Swedish company Grammofon AB BIS. This disc, distributed worldwide, features works by Canadian composers, two of whom are Manitoban.

_7_ The MCO has now produced six recordings — two of which have been nominated for a Juno Award.

_8_ The MCO has appeared three times at the acclaimed Guelph Spring Festival, twice as Orchestra-in-residence; the MCO has also performed at the Olympic Arts Festival in Calgary, 1988; in August, 1999, the Orchestra completed a tour of southern Italy with guest conductor Fabio Mastrangelo; and in 2003, sold out 6 of 7 shows in a tour of British Columbia.

_9_ MCO is funded by all three levels of government: federal, provincial and municipal.
